Forget Me Not Poem
Forget-Me-Nots Poems to Learn By Heart (2012) is an anthology of poems selected by Mary Ann Hoberman (Children's Poet Laureate, 2008-1010) with accompanying illustrations by Michael Emberley. Hoberman encourages her readers to memorize some of these poems by heart because as she explains, 'the rhythm of the heart is similar to the rhythm of poetry.' This is superbly crafted poetry, Loretta. I saw your comment to Iago that it was written before you knew about meter, but I'd say with a built-in metronome like yours the study of meter is superfluous. Of equal or more importance is the unobtrusive rhyme, which is very difficult to achieve with triplets. I actually like triplets better than couplets because, when done this well, they have enough time to induce a mesmerizing state that stops well short of the potential annoyance of monorhyme.
The use of rhyme vowels that alternate between short and long with the well-placed feminine rhyme near the end results in a delightful sonic contrast that strengthens the overall effect of the poem. And R&M are just two of the poetic devices such as alliteration, consonance, assonance, and imagery that make this such a treasure.
The fact that you've done it all instinctively is what separates the poets from the scriveners. But enough shop talk. Though certainly working hand in hand with technicalities, the most important aspect of any poem is whether it evokes an emotional response. This one clearly strikes a chord that resonates deeply. I hope you're considering this one for Moments. This is a lovely poem. I can feel its pure pain. In stanza two, I found the transition of speaking with someone to speaking directly to someone excellent.
I can see this being spoken privately as one places flowers upon a grave with words of shared memories, then speaking to the lost one directly as if they are there. Your iambic pentameter is perfect until S5 and S6 where they lose their form, and you might consider adding a comma here or there.Great poem that really made me feel something soulfully.
I knew two people very much in love, they had to separate, each to unpleasantry, darkness; so I got the idea for one to tell the other to paint their beautiful memories in the darkness when they were apart. I'm finishing editing part two, after the separation.
Thank you so much, isn't it mystical where inspiration comes from; their situation gave the spark to everything else which is imagination. I really like writing in rhyming tersest. What is that contest about; I think I'm too tired to push at this time; I work very slow and many hours, a little rest time required. Maybe one day I'll get quicker. I joined 3 groups, now I have homework, imagine that.
I thought I was done with school last century. Best and Blessings Barbie, Loretta.
